BUILDING UPDATE
Pending Board of Education approval, Copeland will soon be implementing construction plans designed to add classrooms accommodating full-day kindergarten and increasing enrollment numbers. Short-term work (summer 2015) includes moving the library out to a mobile classroom located on the blacktop and building three classrooms in the current library space for use starting in August 2015. Long-term plans (beginning fall 2016) include creating a second floor, adding 5-6 new classrooms, renovating kindergarten classrooms and creating a modernized library.
Mrs. Johnson is already planning for the move and looking forward to a new library that will allow her to even better meet the needs of Copeland students. In order to be ready for summer construction, she has had to alter the end-of-year book inventory. All Copeland library books must, therefore, be returned next Friday, May 1st.
The Building Construction Committee will be meeting regularly to help identify and resolve challenges related to construction and planning for new classrooms. The Committee consists of the CFA Executive Board, teachers, administrators and the architect.
Based upon the current registration of new families to Copeland, we are planning for the following number of sections at each grade level:
Kindergarten – 3 sections
First Grade – 4 sections
Second Grade – 4 sections
Third Grade – 4 sections
Fourth Grade – 3 sections
Fifth Grade – 4 sections
Registration for current D70 families will be available on Monday, April 27th. Please remember that families must register each year for school.
I am very proud of the Copeland teachers for their positive approach to planning for change. We are all excited about this new chapter for Copeland and doing all we can to optimize student instructional spaces safely while minimize interruptions to programming and operating in a financially responsible manner. I will continue to provide updates on this exciting step forward for our school..

open house
Please join us Thursday night, April 30th, at 6:15 in the cafeteria to vote in next year's CFA Executive Board and thank outgoing Board members who have worked so hard for our school. Classrooms will be open from 6:30 - 7:30 pm. In addition to visiting classrooms, please make sure to stop in the gym to celebrate the art displays from each classroom. I'm sure you will enjoy visiting the Oceans in kindergarten, being amazed at the art creations, reading through journals, celebrating portfolios, and spending time with our amazing educators. We look forward to seeing you Thursday night!
end of year parcc testing
The final round of PARCC Testing for students in Grades 3, 4 and 5 will take place next Wednesday through Friday, April 29th through May 1st. Please make sure your children are in attendance and well-rested. This will conclude the new mandated assessments from the State of Illinois.
fifth grade students prepare for highland middle school
Earlier this week, Peer Helpers from Highland Middle School spent time with 5th Grade students at Copeland sharing information and answering their burning questions (about lunch, homework, sports, etc.). On May 22nd, our 5th Grade students will take a bus over to HMS for a tour and more information. Parents of fifth graders are invited to HMS next Tuesday night, April 28th, at 7:00 (parents only please) for a Parent Information Night. We are grateful to Highland for all their efforts to support our students in this important transition.
safety reminders
- Please remember that it is never legal to pass a school bus with its red "STOP" arm extended.
- Please remember that cars cannot wait in the circle drive during dismissal time when the buses are waiting for students. You will get caught behind the buses and create a traffic jam.
- Please remember that the staff parking lot should not be used to drop off or pick up students. Students are walking through the parking lot to get to the playground, and the lot is not a designed drop off zone.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP IN KEEPING US SAFE!
cougie cards drawn -- thank you for showing good character at copeland!

Sign language club
Sign Language Club is one of the many fun activities that students enjoy at Copeland. Every Thursday, a group of 5th graders spend time in Mrs. Lewis's classroom to have fun learning how to sign words, phrases, and songs during lunch and recess. This week, we learned how to sign the Pledge of Allegiance and Happy Birthday in American Sign Language. We had a record number of kids join the club this year, with more than 50 students participating overall. We are lucky to have so many students eager to learn a new language, and we are lucky to have Mrs. Lewis lead this awesome club!
