cubs win the world series!!!
Cougars have been celebrating this great season of baseball -- we have many Chicago Cubs fans in the house! Students have been wearing their Cubs clothing, singing "Go Cubs, Go!" and we even watched the parade and rally during lunch today.

Thank you to all room parents and everyone (including Mother Nature!) for making Halloween such a fun day.
halloween read-in
With great thanks to Mrs. Johnson for her leadership, almost 250 students joined teachers for a Halloween craft and story time. This is such a sweet evening event. Thank you parents for bringing your children out on a rainy night. Thank you to the 14 teachers who volunteered their time to spend time reading with students.
copeland cougars donate their halloween candy
Mr. Feldman's office is filled to ceiling with donated candy. This candy is being loaded on a truck today -- Copeland's 30 boxes plus boxes from Adler, Rockland, and Highland -- and heading out to Operation Gratitude, an organization that ships overseas to soldiers. Thank you for your generosity!
construction update
Substantial Completion on the new gym is nearing. Work continues on the flooring and landscaping. The new flooring is going in (enjoy the pictures) in the gym lobby and the gym floor. Delays with landscaping have delayed the opening of the path. We hope to open the path for arrivals in the near future so that students can walk from 4th Avenue directly to the blacktop. Unfortunately, we will not be able to open the path for dismissal under after construction is complete on the new gym because construction traffic will not make it safe for students to exit through the north parking lot. Plans are underway for a "ribbon cutting" and for students to have the opportunity for move their PE classes to the new gym. Continue to stay tuned ...
kindergarten students ride the fire truck!
After two rain delays, kindergarten students finally got to ride the vintage fire truck along -- thank you Libertyvile Firefighters for spending time with our students. We love this ride around the neighborhood.
calling all veterans
On Thursday, November 10th, Copeland will enjoy its Third Annual Veterans Day assembly. Coffee and refreshments will be served in the cafeteria starting at 7:45 on November 10th in the cafeteria. The assembly will start around 8:20. meet two "super cougies"
Emme and Ana (both in Mrs. Jermakowicz's class) each donated a significant amount of hair to children who have lost their hair after chemotherapy. You are great examples of caring citizens who think of others. (PS: You look adorable with your new hairdos, too!)
thank you for sending in your box tops!
Box Tops for Education is an easy and profitable fundraiser for the CFA. This fall, a contest took place to see which classroom could collect the most box tops. Congratulations to Mrs. Livermore's class (729 box tops) and Mrs. Schroetter's class (595 box tops) for collecting the most box tops for the contest! These two classes were rewarded with an extra recess or classroom game time. With all of the box tops turned in, the CFA anticipates receiving a check for around $700.
Thank you, Mrs. Amidei, for coordinating this fundraiser. Please continue to collect and save box tops for our next contest which will take place in the spring.

highlights from fifth grade
5th grade is off to a great start this year! To help prepare our students for middle school, fifth grade students switch classes for some of the different core subjects. This year, Mrs. Julian is teaching science, while Mrs. Stermitz teaches social studies, and Mrs. Flader teaches math.
In math, we have completed our units on adding and subtracting fractions and decimals. We are moving on to the next unit of multiplying and dividing fractions, and we continue to practice our multiplication facts to increase our success and accuracy in all areas of math.
In social studies, students love discussing current events four days a week, focusing on local, state, national, and global news. We are also learning a lot about geography, including some of the physical features of the United States.
In science, we have enjoyed doing lots of fun, hands-on experiments to explore matter this fall with our pilot program called STEMscopes. We have learned that matter is everywhere!
New this year is the addition of Compass Learning, an online intervention to enhance our knowledge and to challenge each student at his or her own ability level. 5th graders have already learned a lot this year!

great presidential challenge
Thank you to the CFA for an assembly to Copeland. On Wednesday, October 19th, students participated in a game-show-type assembly that reinforced social studies and current event topics. The questions related to numerous general topics related to elections, government, and and history. Even the teachers participated. Thank you for providing this fun learning experience for our school.
