lunchtime entertainment to kickoff spring break
The week before spring break (next week) is always an exciting time at school -- our students (and teachers) find themselves enjoying learning activities, yet preoccupied a tad with thoughts of time away from school. The CFA is helping students enjoy this special week with some lunchtime activities. Mrs. Whisenand and Mrs. Carroll have organized the following events during lunch and recess:
Monday -- Tap Dance Ensemble will perform in the cafeteria
Tuesday -- Rita Pia's Pizzaria will demonstrate (and teach some staff members) how to toss dough
Wednesday -- Crossfit Carbon Kids Club will lead physical activities on the playground during lunch recess for all interested students
Thursday -- Improv Playhouse will perform a small version of American Tall Tales
Friday -- Mr. Carroll sings and plays the guitar in the cafeteria
Many thanks to the everyone for sharing their time and talents with our school community!

principal reads at cook library
Spring is the time for tulips and daffodils, but also a time when local principals are invited to come read stories to children at the Cook Library in downtown Libertyville. Mrs. Poelking will be in the children's section Monday night, March 23rd, from 6:45 until 7:15. The very first story will be read alongside an up-and-coming author -- our very own Kendyl in second grade, who wrote a book called "Copeland Character Counts." Please join Kendyl and me Monday night at the library for some fun and shared stories. Hope to see a big crowd!
phase 2 of the playground expansion coming in april
Phase 2 of the playground build is right around the corner. District 70 maintenance crews are going to remove the older wooden structures. The CFA is funding new equipment, including an addition to the "White House," upper body circuits, and a "ten spin" (an updated merry-go-round). To save money, a "community build" is being coordinated for the installation of new equipment on Saturday, April 11th (rain date is April 18th). Look for an electronic sign up to volunteer your time. On behalf of the students and staff, THANK YOU TO OUR CFA!

a peek into physical education
We have been very busy in physical education this year. From games played at recess to games played on teams, we have learned new skills and honed old ones. Working our hearts jumping rope and throwing balls into hoops or over the net, Copeland students show their athletic spirit each day in class. Juggling always amazes with the talent displayed with scarves and juggle bugs kept in the air. Fourth and fifth graders are also using their math skills keeping score in our bowling unit. Scoring strikes and spares always a challenge, but what an achievement. It will be great to get outside once the snow has melted and the grassed dried up, until then we will dance and test our fitness waiting for the weather to warm up. Were you aware that moderate to high physical activity can make your brain smarter? And juggling can make your brain smarter by asking the left and right hemispheres to talk to each other while you’re juggling. So physical education is not only beneficial to your body, but also to your mind. Thank you for having your child prepared for PE by having their gym shoes at school so they can participate each day. Finally, if you are headed out of town or staying home have a safe and happy spring break.
Fondly,
Mrs. Close
