parent-teacher conferences
Parent-teacher conferences will be held Wednesday and Thursday, October 22nd and 23rd. Conferences are scheduled for 15-minute time slots. Please help us stay on schedule by arriving on time and respecting the next parent’s appointment start time.
A good working relationship between parents and teachers is extremely important. Parents are a child's first teacher. It is critical that both parent and teacher know that the goals for the child are indeed shared goals. Both teacher and parent want what is best for the child/student. Copeland teachers welcome parents to share in the educational goals of the student.
What information would be helpful to share? Here are some ideas -- let the teacher know:
Babysitting Available in the Gym
Thank you, Mrs. Huber, for coordinating Scout and other volunteers to provide childcare during conferences (please, no babies) in the Copeland gym. Games and activities will be available for the children. Parents will register each child for check in/check out purposes. A donation to Scouts will be available (optional). Please do not send food, toys or blankets with your child(ren) during babysitting.
THANK YOU, SCOUTS!!!!
Scholastic Book Fair
Stop by the Book Fair that will be open during conferences! The Book Fair will be set up outside the gym.

halloween is around the corner
Halloween is such a fun time at Copeland. I'm sure your little ones are already thinking about costumes and I know that Room Parents are busy planning for class parties. Here are some important things to remember as you plan:
The Spooky Stroll (parade) will be led by Jack Keating, raffle winner from Fun Fair, around the neighborhood -- weather permitting -- at 12:30.
Students will watch a video after the parade and before class parties.
Class parties will take place from 1:30 - 2:45 -- only 4 adults from each room will attend parties -- these names will be given in advance to Mrs. Bell to speed up the process.
We are excited to celebrate a fun day together!!!
- A maximum of 4 adults will be in the room for class parties
- Questions about foods that will meet our health (allergy) plans can be directed to Mrs. Beckman, school nurse -- room parents should provide Mrs. Beckman with a list of what will be served at the parties by Thursday 10/23.
- Food and supplies for parties can be dropped off on tables outside of the office
- Students bring their costumes and change after lunch
- Students going home for lunch must be signed out in the office and signed back in when returning
- Costumes cannot include weapons or weapon look-alikes -- students must be able to see out of masks

copeland promise plan
The Copeland Promise Plan can now be access on our web page under the Character Counts! tab under Home. This plan was piloted last year and promotes positive behavior and consistent follow through. When students show great character and follow the promises, they earn Cougie Cards. When students show character that is against the promises, they are given a "Broken Promise." This positive behavior intervention system was written by a team of teachers with input from Student Council. Our goal is to provide a safe and happy environment where students can learn.
COPELAND STUDENT COUNCIL
Each year, fifth grade students are invited to run for Student Council Officer positions. The students prepare campaign posters and give speeches. Students in Grades 2-5 elect the officers. This year, we heard 26 terrific speeches before votes were cast. In addition to Student Council officers, each classroom in Grades 3-5 elect or appoint representatives to attend bimonthly meetings during lunch. Student Council provides students with an opportunity to see government at work. They wrestle with school issues and help with service projects. The teacher leaders for Student Council are Mrs. Reinking and Mrs. Jermakowicz. We are appreciate your service to our school.
what's happening in first grade
We have been very busy in First Grade!
In Social Studies, we learned about school rules, how we learn from each other and who helps us at school. We made podcasts of Copeland helpers. Look to see those at conference time.
In Language Arts, we have been enjoying learning our new spelling word
sorts and all of the games and activities that go with them. We have also been busy learning the narrative writing style.
In science we have learned about living and non-living things. We are now studying different habitats and have made our own backyard terrarium habitats. Parents, we ask that you take these home when you come for parent/teacher conferences.
Thank you!

students amaze an adoring audience at this year's variety show
Superhero Performers danced, played the piano, sang, performed magic and martial arts and celebrated their many talents and skills during the performance on October 9th. A grateful audience enjoyed 24 acts thanks to the leadership of Mrs. Chickey and Mrs. Edelsberg. Thank you all for a wonderful evening!
