first trimester report cards
District 70 is in its fourth year of utilizing a Standard Based reporting system to communicate with parents about student achievement and performance at school. Our report cards were created after years of research and study to align reporting systems with teaching and learning practices. Educational research reveals negative connotations related to "traditional" styles of grading that layered student performance, work habits, homework completion, and attitudes about learning into one grade. Standards based report cards communicate students performance based on National and State standards. After reviewing your child's report card, parents should have a better understanding of their child's level of proficiency toward mastery of content objectives and learning goals. Characteristics of successful learners and behaviors are separated from levels of proficiency.
District 70 is advanced in its systems and reporting practices. While it may be difficult for parents to understand a practice at first that is different than traditional practices, reporting proficiency toward mastery of standards provides a more accurate representation of what a student really knows.
If you would like more information related to the historical progression of D70 report cards, the research behind the report cards, or about the D70 Applications of Learning, please visit the D70 website and go to the Curriculum Department page where Mr. Youngman has created a podcast to provide information and answer frequently asked questions.
On November 21st, students will receive their first trimester report cards that reflect academic achievement during the first three months of school, as well as effort and behavior. Parents are encouraged to spend time discussing the report together with their children. When you talk to your son or daughter about the report, please celebrate their accomplishments and set goals in areas of improvement for the next three months.

cougies extend a helping hand
Many thanks to Mrs. Carroll for coordinating a food drive to help stock the shelves of the Libertyville Food Pantry. Students brought in items and put their name on hand prints that are now decorating our front doors. Copeland Manor is such a generous community of citizens who help each other.
parent visitation day
Thank you to all the parents who were able to take time out of their days to come to school and experience a typical class period. We hope you enjoyed your visit.
second grade highlights
In November the second graders were busy Pilgrims! As part of the social studies and language arts curriculum, second grade participated in a Pilgrim simulation. For five weeks, the students “lived” the lives of Pilgrims and learned about their hardships and struggles on the Mayflower, as well as in the New World. Teams of 4 or 5 students sailed the Atlantic Ocean in 6’x3’ “ships” in the classrooms. After landing in the New World each team had to write a Compact to establish a government for their colony, build houses, earn a Peace Treaty with the Indians, plant crops, and trade with the Indians. Upon completing each task the children were required to write about their adventures in a journal. Mrs. Przybylski, our technology coach, lead 2 technology lessons for our students using the website HYPERLINK "http://www.plimoth.org/media/olc/intro.html" http://www.plimoth.org/media/olc/intro.html. Please explore the site to learn additional fun facts about the lives of the Pilgrims and their Indian friends. All had an amazing journey while developing a deeper understanding of why the Pilgrims gave thanks and why we honor them today --just ask any second grader!!
mrs. policht's second graders receive a special gift from a solider pen pal
Mrs. Policht's class has been writing to a soldier in Kuwait
and recently received a special present. Each student received a stuffed camel. Their response has been to turn this gift into another learning experience with narrative writing and learning about camels. The class is now researching facts about camels (watch out - they spit!), has named the camel and will write about time they spend with their camels. What a fun surprise!
