The First day of school
Thank you all for a wonderful start to the 2015-2016 school year. The year started with an all school assembly where we talked about making SUPER CHOICES this year -- perhaps they were going to reach out to a new friend, or explore new opportunities, or choose to work hard and look for challenges. Together, the students and staff made PROMISES to one another to begin a year of positive behavior:
I promise to be respectful
I promise to be responsible and safe
I promise to be ready to learn
The fun and learning has begun and we look forward to a great year together!

welcome, Mr. feldman
Mr. Feldman joins Copeland and D70 as an Assistant Principal/PE teacher. This position was created to meet increased administrative responsibilities and staff additional PE sections resulting from an increase in enrollment/class sections. As Assistant Principal, Mr. Feldman will be working side-by-side with Mrs. Poelking with a focus on student behavior aligned with our Copeland Promise Plan and school safety. His experience and passion in the gym teaching PE is clearly evident. He looks forward to getting to know the Copeland community and working closely with all students and staff members. Welcome to Copeland, Mr. Feldman!
a note from copeland's physical education team
Mr. Feldman and Mr. Etnyre are excited to be starting off the year in PE. Mr Feldman comes to Copeland after teaching in Grayslake. He also spends a portion of his day as our new assistant principal. Mr Etnyre has taught the last 11 years at Butterfield, but has always come to Copeland to teach PE during that time. He also coaches the girls cross country and track teams at LHS. We'll begin the year getting everyone acquainted with expectations of our PE classes and the playground. After that, K-2 students will spend some time focusing on their spatial awareness while 3-5 classes begin flag football. All classes will then begin soccer. We're looking forward to working with all the students at Copeland and becoming a part of the school community.
starting band and orchestra
We are so excited that the school year has begun! The time has come to kick off the 2015-2016 Beginning Band and Orchestra in District 70! Fourth grade students and interested fifth grade students along with their parents should attend our informational meetings on Wednesday, September 2nd! There will be separate meetings for orchestra and band. Come to one OR BOTH! We’d be happy to see you! The Beginning Orchestra meeting will be in the Highland Middle School South gym from 7:00-7:45pm. The Beginning Band meeting will immediately follow in the Highland Middle School North gym at 7:45-8:15. We hope you can make it! If you have a conflict with the meeting time, please e-mail [email protected] (Carla Bollinger) about band, and [email protected] (Carol Janossy) about orchestra.
new teachers at copeland
Mrs. Flader, Miss Keske, and Miss Bernard are quickly settling into our amazing group of Copeland teachers. Mrs. Flader is teaching 5th grade, Miss Keske is teaching 2nd grade, and Miss Bernard is teaching art on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. All three teachers were already a part of the D70 educational staff last year, and we are excited to welcome them to full-time positions this year at Copeland. Miss Spector (not pictured) will be teaching art to third grade students on Monday mornings. We are grateful to these talented educators for joining our team.
building changes at copeland
Copeland has undergone construction over the summer due to an increase in enrollment and expansion of the full-day kindergarten program. The library has been relocated to allow for three temporary classrooms to be built where the library was previously situated. Extensive time, resources, physical effort and planning has gone into creating learning spaces that align with the standard to which Copeland families have come to expect. Plans for long-term solutions for the 16-17 school year will begin soon. These plans will be communicated as they develop.
safe and happy arrival
We are beginning to settle into our regular routine for morning drop offs. Some points for parents to remember:
- Please drop off your children and allow them to walk independently to their lines. If you need assistance with the transition, please contact any supervisor or Mrs. Poelking or Mr. Feldman.
- Do not pull into the staff parking lot -- it is not designed for a drop off
- Make sure your child is ready to exit the car so that the traffic moves along quickly on 7th Avenue
- Drop offs are only allowed in the circle drive after 8:05.
- If it rains, students will enter the building and walk to either the gym (Grades K-2) or the cafeteria (Grades 3-5) to wait for the bell.
great turn out for the kick off dinner
A great time was had by all the families who came to the CFA Kick Off Dinner on Thursday, August 27th. Students danced, played and ate great food together to kick off a fun year as a community of learners. Thank you, Mary Eiserman, and everyone for making last night so much fun.
