art fest 2015
Thank you to the CFA, Mrs. Chen's leadership, and all the presenters and volunteers who made our special day on May 8th such a huge success. Everyone learned in a fun way about the many ways we can celebrate art together; print art, multi-media art, photography, splash design to music, martial arts, graffiti art, commercial art, movement, weaving, and so much more. The students had a great day, and our school now benefits from a "Wishing Wall" in the front entrance as well as a "Technicolor Quilt" hanging on the wall next to the gym. Everyone enjoyed attending an assembly from Artbeat Live, when Elliott Fromm created three paintings before our eyes to music. Soon, you will see the Cougar hanging by the front door as a reminder of this great event.
A great year of music
From Mrs. Griffin, Copeland Music and Band Teacher
In the midst of concert season, I just wanted to take a moment to say how proud I am of our students this year! They truly have become musical people! In kindergarten, they are prepping for their very first performance at the end of the school year! The first graders also performed their very first “large scale” performance in February! Our second and third graders were excellent role models at this concert, and the third graders demonstrated their new instrumental skills on the recorder. In fourth and fifth grade, our students have grown as musicians through performance on their instruments as well as through their voices. Many of them have chosen to start playing in the band or orchestra, and many have chosen to be in Chorus Club. Other students have excelled at playing the recorder and learning new musical concepts in class! As I listen to the students singing every day, I can’t help but feel joyful at all of their musical growth. Thank you for encouraging your students to be musical in their already busy lives! Have a wonderful summer!

Once Upon A Time in First Grade…
First grade has been very busy learning about various fairy tales. We have enjoyed discussing their common elements and comparing and contrasting different versions of the familiar tales.
Students have been learning about different types of writing. We practiced supporting our opinions about a topic of choice and our favorite movie. We have also learned about writing directions to different places around the school.
In social studies, we have been focusing on maps. Students learned the difference between neighborhoods, cities, states, countries and continents. We also learned about bordering states, directions and birds eye view. We also had fun discussing the ways in which neighborhoods change over time. It was hard for them to believe that Libertyville did not always look the way it does today!
We are starting to get ready for our May field trip by learning about different simple machines. Get ready to hear all about wedges, pulleys, screws, wheels and axels and inclined planes from your child. Perhaps you can discover many of them together around your house as well.
Wait until you see our flower gardens of reading. Flowers are blooming all over the hallways. Our students have been awesome readers and are continuing to "bloom."

4th grade poets
Students in Mrs. Livermore's Fourth Grade class have been writing their reflections and thoughts through the use of poetry. A national poetry contest accepted 10 poetical voices from Copeland Manor School for publication in a book entitled :Creative Communication, A Celebration of Poets. Each student was asked to create a poem that was original, done at school without assistance, and no longer than 21 lines. After brainstorming, reading and listening to various types of poems, students embarked on their own journey creating the following poems:
Nick - Hit the Ball High
Anna - A Beautiful Part of the Planet
Aleks - The Amazing Sport of Golf
Alena -Peculiar Poetry
Valerie -Waking Up in the Woods
Giana - Rainy Day Fun
Ricky -Soda is the Best
Kellen - Summer So Super Fun
Griffin -The Amazing Sport of Soccer
Abbie - Candy Breaks Your Heart

but wait, there's more 4th grade writing to celebrate
Mrs. Livermore's 4th grade students recently participated in a writing contest: 2015 Letters for Literature Contest in Illinois. There were 6,901 participants. Four semi-finalists are from Copeland Manor School. Those wonderful writers are: Alena, Griffin, Aleks, and Nicholas. Students were asked to write to the author of their childhood favorite book sharing why their book was so meaningful. According to Mrs. Livermore, "I must say, I have had students participate for a few years now and I have never had four selected in one year! Very happy for these writers!"
the library is packing its shelves
As previously reported, Copeland's library is packing up to move to a temporary location for next school year. Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Hoyle needed help and requested that all books be returned. Mrs. Johnson promised the students that she would do a cartwheel when all books were returned. Take a look -- maybe we will next see her in the Olympics?

special people you should know
We have some very special superheroes at Copeland: Miss Sanders, Mrs. Conn, Miss Keske, and Mrs. Anderer are paraprofessionals/teaching assistants. They are special teachers who work with students throughout our building every day -- and even before and AFTER SCHOOL too! Thank you for the love and talent you bring to school each day -- we love you!
VOLLEYBALL WAS A LOT OF FUN!
THANKS, Mrs. Hay, for coaching 4th and 5th grade volleyball. The students had a blast learning and playing together. On Monday, the 5th graders challenged staff members to a friendly game. Next Monday, the 4th graders will play against parents.
