A Note from mrs. poelking
It was wonderful to see so many parents at Curriculum Night last evening who were eager to partner with their child's teacher as we plan together for a great school year ahead. The year is off to a running start. Each school day at Copeland is filled with rigorous learning activities and children who are eager to show kindness and gratitude. If you ever have a question or comment about anything happening at school, your child's teacher is your first point of contact. I am thrilled to return to Copeland and join you in making sure our students are safe and meeting academic and behavior goals. Every day, I am reminded what a happy place our school is. Thank you to everyone who has made this a great start to a new school year.
You will notice that our newsletter has a different format. I am challenging myself to expand my use of technology and using a web-based format called "Weebly." This old dog enjoys learning new tricks. Communicating all that is going on at school is important. Thank you for taking the time to read our newsletters and stay informed. The purpose of this newsletter is to share building initiatives, events, and celebrate successes. We are never lacking for information!

STAR TESTING BEGINS NEXT WEEK
Students in Grades K-5 will take an assessment using technology starting next week and continuing through September 12th. Teachers are very excited to have this resource help them plan instruction for students in reading and math. Parents will receive reports from the assessment in early October -- watch for an invitation to an informational meeting for parents related to STAR. This is a new experience for all of us -- we will learn about STAR together. Students will take the assessment in the fall, winter and spring to measure growth.
The Copeland library program has some exciting opportunities in store for your child this year:
▪ Our program will be promoting the very best of children's literature to your child with activities designed to help students enjoy the stories even more.
▪ We will be doing our very best to get (or keep) your children "hooked on reading" by recommending specific reading materials to students.
▪ We will add 200 or more new titles this year of the latest and most exciting new books for young readers, including quality non-fiction to help meet the Common Core and ISAIL requirements.
▪ At each grade level, students will be learning research and computer skills specifically suited to their developmental needs.
▪ We will be working with classroom teachers to help them find materials especially suited to the individual interests and abilities of your child.
▪ Library lessons will stress good Digital Citizenship, helping your child make safe and ethical decisions when using the Internet.
▪ NOOKs (e-readers) and Shuffles in the library will be available for 5th graders to explore this year.
▪ Birthday Book forms will be sent home the month prior to your child’s birthday. Please consider participating in this program that honors your child’s birthday and adds new books to our collection.
▪ Please visit our NEW website to get access the online library catalog and other important documents, tutorials and procedures at http://copelandlibrary.weebly.com

copeland manor promise plan
The Copeland Promise Plan is our new school-wide behavior plan that provides consistent language detailing our expectation for behavior that aligns with the pillars of Character Counts: respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, caring, fairness, and citizenship. Students made promises to be respectful, responsible and safe, and ready to learn. We celebrate positive behavior with in many ways, including generous giving of COUGIE CARDS. Every once in awhile, we choose one card from each grade to read over the intercom and invite to have Lunch with the Principal. The first lunch celebration will be SEPTEMBER 30TH. Already, close to 40 Cougie Cards have been drawn. Congratulations to the following students whose cards were drawn this morning.

Welcome back from Mrs. sartain
Copeland art teacher
Dear Parents,
Welcome Back! I hope everyone had an artful, creative, hands- on- fun, visually, and stimulating summer! With Super Heroes being our theme this year, I found a few apropos quotes to share "…
"All art requires courage." By, Ann Tucker
" Art has the power to transform, to illuminate, to educate, to inspire, and to motivate." Annoymous
"Any form of art is a form of power. It has impact. It can affect change. It can not only move us, it makes us move." By, Ossie Davis
And finally, here is one from one of my heroes, Albert Einstein:
"Imagination is more important than knowledge"
All children will have a chance to "Power Up" when they come to art this year… by,
*meeting state art goals
*being introduced to and practicing the elements and principles of art
*infusing our 40 minutes a week with as many connections we can make to the core curriculum and 21st century learning
* experiencing different techniques, textures, cultures , stayles and materials
* encouraging and exercising right brain thinking
* building confidence to explore art and express ourselves through art
*practicing strategies
And …Always trying their best
BIG NEWS!! Art Fundraiser Coming Soon!
Just a heads up that once again we are participating in the Original Works fundraising program. This fall, each student will make one work of art as their Original Works piece. In the past we have tried to make a few to choose from, but it gets complicated so I'm going with the subject that has been proven to work well for each grade level. If you are familiar with this program and would like to work on your own piece at home there are fairly strict guidelines: (We will be using 8.5x11 cardstock. There are certain materials that cannot be used like glitter and the child's name must be easy to read (we put ours I n the bottom right hand corner). The images are scanned so artwork should go to the edge but be aware any cropping that has to be done might affect the outcome.)
Your child will be bringing home their packet with their artwork the day they have art the week of Sept. 29, 30, Oct. 1,2,3.
If you are not interested in having your child participate and do not wish to have a packet come home, please email me: [email protected] I'll try to remember or, if once the artwork comes home and you wish not to purchase anything, please send the packet back. Sometimes we run short of materials either because of student enrollment or some students order using multiple pieces.
We have a parent volunteer processing all of these orders so please have your order turned in to your classroom teacher.
Deadline: Copeland: Wednesday, October 15
Calling all Art Volunteers -- we need help during Youth Art Month. At the end of February/beginning of March, we will need help putting up artwork in the library and around Libertyville. Please let me know if I can add you to the helper list.
Thank you!

NEXT WEEK IS LAKE COUNTY ATTENDANCE WEEK. Last year, Copeland was recognized for outstanding attendance -- let's do it again. Attendance in school is critical for student achievement. Unless your child is sick, please make school attendance a priority.
