spring sing
On April 19th, students in Grades 1, 2, and 3 performed for a large, very appreciative audience the show "Back to the 50s." Mrs. Griffin, dressed in her pink poodle skirt, led the students as they sang, danced (even did the Bunny Hop and The Twist) and brought joy to everyone present. Wonderful job, students! Thank you, Mrs. Griffin, for a great show. Thank you, teachers, for your help in making the show a success. Most of all, thank you to the students for your energy and talents.
construction update
The fencing is up and excavation has begun! While the play space has been impacted, we did our very best to maintain a path to the playground yet still allow construction work to continue. Many thanks to the students and teachers for their positive "we will MAKE IT WORK" attitudes. Construction is never easy, but the outcome will be wonderful. The playground remains available to the community on evenings and weekends through a gate in the field. The path from 4th Avenue to the back of the school remains accessible. Work in the spring until the end of school will only be outside on the additions (gym and new classrooms). No work will begin on the inside of the school until school is out for the summer.

battle of the books
Fifth graders participated in the Copeland Manor's Battle of the Books final today. This is a voluntary reading program, aimed at encouraging students to read good books and have fun while competing with their peers. This year we had 32 fifth graders participate. They formed teams of four players and started to read. The Battle of the Books reading list included 35 books that were nominated for either the Bluestem or Rebecca Caudill book award for 2016. The teams split up these books, read them and took careful notes. Today’s competition marked the end of almost 5 months or reading, studying and note taking for these students.
The winning team this year was Team MAAS, which consisted of Alexandra, Maya, Samantha, and Anna. Congratulations to all the students who worked hard this year!
These students will face off against Butterfield’s school winners to determine the District 70 Elementary Champions. That competition is scheduled for Monday May 9th at 3:30 in the Highland Learning Center.

what's happening in kindergarten?
Kindergarten students are making a splash as we dive in to explore the wonders of the oceans and their many inhabitants! We have been utilizing nonfiction books to discover facts about marine animals, along with videos to see the many ocean animals in their natural habitats. The students are expanding their knowledge about marine animals, their unique characteristics, habitats, and adaptations to their environments on our journeys through the sea. We have also made our own sea creatures to transform our classroom into our very own ocean! The children’s natural curiosity about marine animals is keeping them captivated and engaged throughout our studies!
Our exploration of marine animals will culminate with an eagerly anticipated visit to the Shedd Aquarium! During our field trip, students will have time to explore the many exhibits at the aquarium and see the unique and fascinating marine animals up‐close. We will also enjoy seeing and hearing how animals like beluga whales, sea lions, and dolphins are cared for every day by their trainers at the Aquatic Show.
We look forward to having you all visit our classroom ocean habitat during Open House, next Thursday, April 28th!
