What a fun evening! On April 27th, Copeland opened its doors to the community. Students had a blast acting as tour guides and showing off all of their hard work thus far this school year. At the brief CFA meeting in the gym, exiting executive board members were thanked and new board members were approved.

spring sing
On April 20th, students in Grades 1, 2, and 3 performed for a large, very appreciative audience in our gym. The show, titled "Teach the World to Sing," featured songs from around the world -- the dances were awesome! Thank you, Mrs. Griffin, for a great show. Thank you, teachers, for your help in making the show a success. Most of all, thank you to the students for your energy and talents.
kindergarten highlights
Kindergarten students are making a splash as we dive in to explore the wonders of the oceans and their many inhabitants! We have been utilizing nonfiction books to discover facts about marine animals, along with videos to see the many ocean animals in their natural habitats. The students are expanding their knowledge about marine animals, their unique characteristics, habitats, and adaptations to their environments on our journeys through the sea. We have also made our own sea creatures to transform our hallway into our very own Kindergarten Ocean! The children’s natural curiosity about marine animals is keeping them captivated and engaged throughout our studies! A highlight has been using QR codes to watch a video about a specific marine animal, writing down facts we learned and then turning our research into a Book Creator book. How far we have come in Kindergarten!
Our exploration of marine animals will conclude with an eagerly anticipated visit to the Shedd Aquarium! During our field trip, students will have time to explore the many exhibits at the aquarium and see the unique and fascinating marine animals up‐close. We will also enjoy seeing and hearing how animals like beluga whales, sea lions, and dolphins are cared for every day by their trainers at the Aquatic Show.
We look forward to culminating a wonderful school year on June 1st at our Kindergarten Celebration. The celebration will take place in the amazing new Copeland Gym at 1:30. See you then!

battle of the books
Fifth graders participated in Copeland Manor's Battle of the Books final on April 26th. This is a voluntary reading program, aimed at encouraging students to read good books and have fun while competing with their peers. This year we had 34 fifth graders participate. They formed teams of three or four players and started to read. The Battle of the Books reading list included 20 books that were nominated for either the Bluestem or Rebecca Caudill book award for 2017. The teams split up these books, read them and took careful notes. Wednesday's competition marked the end of almost 5 months or reading, studying and note-taking for these students.
The winning team this year was Team FPI, which consisted of Caroline, Eleni, Jocelyn, and Breck. Congratulations to all the students who worked hard this year!
These students will face off against the school winners from all three other elementary schools to determine the District 70 Elementary Champions. That competition is scheduled for Wednesday May 3rd at 3:45 in the Highland Learning Center.
