copeland celebrates veterans
At an assembly this morning, students in kindergarten through fifth grade celebrated the Character Counts trait of Citizenship in a special way. The event started with a beautiful performance by the Copeland chorus singing "The Star Spangled Banner." Then, Sergeant Harrel, in active duty, led the Pledge of Allegiance, and talked to our students about citizenship, patriotism, and his service to our country. We had over 30 veterans, family and friends of the Copeland community, introduce themselves. The veterans were then treated to a song performed by every student called, "Grateful Nation." The students showed great respect to the veterans and appreciated their stories of service. Thank you to our honored guests and to Mrs. Travelstead and Mrs. Chickey, Character Counts leaders at Copeland. Thanks also to Mrs. Griffin for working with the students to learn this awesome song!

I am confident that when we celebrate Veteran's Day on November 11th, students will remember singing the song and seeing the smiling faces of our honored guests today. Copeland shares a heart-felt THANK YOU to all the men and women who serve our country and are the ultimate examples of citizenship.
Please continue the conversation at home about how we can show citizenship each and every day. In a simple way, Citizenship is the act of being a good neighbor. Being a citizen comes with rights, duties and privileges. With every right comes the responsibility to exercise it in a fair manner and to help fellow citizens do the same.

what's happening in Third grade
Third graders have been busy exploring their new chrome books
these past several months. Students are learning how to use
Google drive to collaborate on such activities as science weather
presentations and completing a character trait reading project.
Most recently all third graders began using the district program,
Typing Agent to help foster their keyboarding skills.
In the coming weeks third graders will be learning all about
immigration. This cross curricular unit will include researching
and reporting on their own family backgrounds, and comparing and
contrasting multicultural immigration stories from the past and
present. Students will also enjoy a special celebration where they
will gather first hand accounts of what life was like for their
grandparents' generation.
