kindergarten registration for 2015-2016
Libertyville District 70 has started planning for the 2015 - 2016 school year. We begin with kindergarten. The Board of Education has recently voted to expand the full-day program for every school with no additional cost. A half-day program remains an option without mid-day transportation. Students enrolled in the half-day program will be placed in a full-day classroom and participate in half of the instructional day in the morning. If you are a parent of an incoming kindergarten student and are struggling with the decision to enroll in half day or full day, please contact Mrs. Poelking to set up a meeting. Early registration is helpful for the school to create the best possible learning environment for students. As you consider the options, please think about the year as a whole so that your child receives a consistent program for his/her kindergarten year in school. The "Kindergarten Registration" tab can be found on the left side of the main Libertyville District 70 website (www.d70schools.org) and on the Copeland web page. The Registration link includes all of the information parents need to complete the registration process, including an FAQ about kindergarten.

happy 2015!
Happy 2015! Eight days back to school, and we are back in the swing. After two days off due to extreme weather, students were eager to return to their “Home Away from Home” at Copeland and get back to schoolwork. Welcome back!
Update your Phone Numbers – Please inform the office if you change your phone number. This way, you can be contacted if an emergency arises during the school day and also alerted to school closings.
Cold Weather Clothing Needed – As a rule, students will go outside unless the wind chill drops below 0 degrees. Please label your child’s snow pants and boots.
School Calendar Changes – The Board of Education will vote on an altered calendar to account for the two school closings. This usually doesn’t occur until after the threat of further closing has passed (April??).
Patience Required During Arrival and Dismissal – With the cold temperatures, there is an increased number of students being dropped off at school (instead of walking or taking the bus). Please be extra patient as you pull up in front of Copeland during the busy drop off and pick up. Students will not be considered “tardy” if you are stuck in traffic, so please don’t worry. It will help if you pull up as far as you can go so that other cars can pull in behind you.
7th Avenue is One-way At Arrival and Dismissal Times – In order to ease traffic patterns, cars should only be traveling south.

what's happening in fourth grade
Lions, and tigers, and bears, OH MY! Fourth graders have done more than see The Wizard of Oz at the Marriott. They have learned how to classify these animals and others as vertebrates or invertebrates, sort them by their consumer type, and describe their adaptations. Recently we started to learn all about the states of matter, mixtures and solutions, and physical and chemical changes! Social studies took us to the Northeast where the students learned about this region of the US by looking at the region through the lens of a geographer, economist, historian, and political scientist. Through maps and history this area became more alive and sparked imaginations of past events. Now, they are using some of this background knowledge and applying it to the Southeast region. Students have also worked hard in math! Place value, multiplication of multi-digit numbers, long division, and basic algebra with variables are behind us, and fourth graders are now working with fractions in math. Ask a fourth grader about improper fractions, mixed numbers, and equivalent fractions! In reading, summarizing narrative text has been a recent focus, but all fourth graders have been perfecting their ability to support their answers with text evidence. Fourth grade marks a time to expand thinking skills with students needing to be able to explain their reasoning. Text evidence and explanations will continue to be important all year! These fourth graders have proved they have the courage, heart, and brains to tackle any challenge they face!
congratulations geo bee contestants and winner!
Congratulations to Copeland's top nine students for the 2014 Geography Bee. They are (in random order):
Chhaya D., Griffin J., Matthew R., Charlie F., Jack K.,Jack M., Braden A., Aidan O., Anna K.
All 4th and 5th grade students participated in this competition which consists of 7 rounds of oral questions concerning local and world geography. Each classroom had a class winner and the next highest scores overall were used to round out the top nine.
The final round of the Geography Bee took place in the library the week before winter break. Congratulations to Matthew Ramaker, who is this year's school winner. Matthew will take the qualifying test next Tuesday to try to qualify for the state Geography Bee in Springfield this Spring.
Congratulations Matthew and great work to all our qualifying Cougies!
