orchestra concert
On Thursday, February 2nd, the District 70 elementary orchestra concert took place at Butterfield School. On a cold night, the students warmed the crowd with songs to get us moving and grooving. Great job, orchestra! You sound amazing.
assessments -- cogat and parcc
COGAT (2ND GRADE): Students in second grade will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) the week of February 6th. This is an aptitude test taken by all second grade students in second grade in District 70. Results of the test guide efforts to adapt instruction to the needs and abilities of students and measure cognitive development. CogAT results are used to help identify academically talented students. Results will be mailed to parents later this spring.
PARCC (GRADES 3, 4 and 5): April 10-21. All students in Grades 3-5 take English Language Arts and Math tests on chrome books. Students in 4th grade also take a science test. Results of this test in the past two years have been mailed to parents in the fall.

news from mrs. griffin
In music class, we have been keeping busy learning! In our younger grades, we are learning how to sing with solfege syllables “so-mi” and talking about the different families of instruments in the orchestra. Our third graders just finished up a fun unit on recorder where they earned multiple “karate belts” for testing out of songs. 3rd grade student Abby Neff even tested into some of the 5th grade level songs! In our upper grades, we have been discussing the multiple forms of “harmony” in music. We have explored the ostinato, the round, the countermelody, and singing in multiple parts at once. 4th and 5th grade parents, ask your students what an “ostinato” is, and what it means in English!
We are also quickly approaching our first band concert of the year! Our 4th and 5th grade band students have worked really hard this year learning their concert music, and we look forward to putting on a great concert this Tuesday! Students that are performing int he band concert should be at Butterfield School at 6:45PM for a 7PM concert. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

sixth grade health requirements -- a letter from the health office
The Illinois State School Code Health Law, Section 665, requires that a child have a complete physical examination, including mandated immunizations, upon entrance into kindergarten, sixth, and ninth grades.
Any child entering sixth grade shall show proof (see section 665.250(b) of receiving one dose of Tdap vaccine regardless of the interval since the last DTap, DT or Td dose.
New: Any child entering 6th grade will be required to have 1 dose of Meningococcal vaccine or 2 doses for entrance into 12th grade, unless the 1st dose was administered to a child that was 16 years old, in which case only 1 dose would be required at 12th grade entrance.
New: Any child entering 6th grade is required to show proof of having 3 doses of Hepatitis B. The first two doses shall have been received no less then 4 weeks (28 days) apart. The interval between the second and third doses shall be at least 2 months 56 days)
New: The immunization record must also show proof of 2 MMR, and 2 Varicella
The physical examination can be administered within the 12 months previous to the child’s entrance into school.
If your child plans to participate in sports, they will require a “sports physical.” A sport physical is valid for one year from the time of completion. The physical must be given after May 15, 2017 to be valid for the entire school year.
The only difference between a sports physical and regular physical is a sports physical does not require immunization records. If your regular physical is completed after May 15, 2017 it can be considered a “sports physical.”
Inasmuch as your child will enter sixth grade in the fall, a “Certificate of Health Examination” is enclosed and is to be completed by you and your physician. The physical exam has 2 pages and requires 3 signatures. The signatures required are:
1. Immunizations (health care provider)
2. Health history (parent)
3. Physical exam signed by MD, APN, or PA
A dental examination is required for all students entering kindergarten, second, and sixth grade.
It is recommended that parents make arrangements with their physicians as soon as possible to ensure the required physical examination(s) and immunizations before registration in August. Failure to comply with the above statutory requirements will result in your child’s exclusion from school.
Please visit the school’s website to see a listing of sites for vaccinations and physicals. Here is a link to the school website:
