the gym is open for business -- oh happy day!
With a happy song by the chorus, speeches of gratitude and celebration, balloons, and even a confetti canon, the new gym is open! The day finally arrived after over a year of construction. We are grateful to everyone -- Dr. Schumacher for his vision, the D70 Board of Education and the community who see the true value of providing exceptional facilities to help in the growth of this area’s most valuable resource: our students, the teachers for their hard work and sacrifices, and to the students for their patience. There was JOY in our gym this morning.
The space will hold many games, celebrations, and performances for years to come. We look forward to sharing experiences and making memories.
Today was for the students -- tomorrow, students can be the tour guides for their families who attend the pancake breakfast. If there is anyone who is not able to see the new gym tomorrow but could like a tour, please contact Mr. Feldman or Mrs. Poelking to set up a time.

On Thursday night, December 1st, the Copeland cafeteria was full of families learning and playing math games together. Games and activities were provided for all ability levels. THANK YOU to the nine teachers who volunteered their time to facilitate the event. Congratulations to Jonas for his excellent estimation skills!
Fall sing
On Thursday, November 17th, students in chorus and all of 4th and 5th grade sang patriotic songs at Butterfield School. Under the leadership of Mrs. Griffin, they sang beautifully and moved gracefully. Many parents commented on the positive feelings of patriotism the students brought out in everyone in attendance. Well done!
girls on the run
GIRLS ON THE RUN IS SO MUCH FUN!!!
The GOTR fall season is a wrap!
We were lucky to coach an amazing group of young ladies! Our girls learned how to work together, encourage one another and adapt a healthy and happy life style. The girls were positive, friendly and became strong runners. We are amazed at their insight and determination. During our 10 weeks we learned many valuable life lessons. We also learned how important it is to give back to the community. The girls participated in a community project to help others by collecting warm clothing for Beacon Place in Waugekan. Again, we could not be more proud of these young ladies!

Grandparent's day in third grade
On Tuesday, November 22nd, grandparents were invited to spent time in their grandchild's classroom. Many grandparents traveled great distances to see what life is like in third grade in 2016. Students had a chance to hear what school was like for their grandparent(s) when they went to school. What a special time together and awesome memory-maker!
food pantry donations
Thank you, CFA, for organizing the Helping Hands efforts and to all of the families who donated food for the Libertyville Food Pantry.
cup stacking at copeland
Over the past month, our students have been participating in cup stacking in, and out of school. Cup stacking is also known as sport or speed stacking, and is a sport where students stack cups in a specific pattern or sequence as fast as they can. There are 3, 6 and 10 stacks that are incorporated together to ultimately form the cycle. On November 22 the top two stackers from each class in 3rd-5th grade came in at 7 am for our 2nd annual school tournament. We crowned grade level champions, and ultimately our overall Copeland champion. Congrats to all that participated!!!

news from second grade
In November the second graders were busy Pilgrims! As part of the social studies curriculum second grade participated in a Pilgrim simulation. For 5 weeks, the students “lived” the lives of Pilgrims and learned about their hardships and struggles on the Mayflower, as well as in the New World. Teams of 4 or 5 students sailed the Atlantic Ocean in 6’x3’ “ships” in the classrooms. After landing in the New World each team had to write a Compact to establish a government for their colony, build houses, earn a Peace Treaty with the Indians, plant crops, and trade with the Indians. Upon completing each task the children were required to write about their adventures in a journal. A culminating bartering fair was held following the Pilgrim simulation. Students brought items from home that they were willing trade...Just like in 1620, sometimes their trades were welcome and accepted, yet other times not! In addition, students learned more about time in 1620 using the website http://www.plimoth.org/media/olc/intro.html. Please explore the site to learn additional fun facts about the lives of the Pilgrims and their Indian friends. All had an amazing journey while developing a deeper understanding of why the Pilgrims gave thanks and why we honor them today --just ask any second grader!!

creative writers in mrs. livermore's class
The results from the first writing contest for 2016-17 with Creative Communication have arrived and we have 14 incredible essayists! It is such a treat to have an opportunity for students to share their voice in writing and be heard by strangers that recognize good writing. It takes more than one attempt at writing to make a quality piece and the rest of the class deserves to be recognized as they were the editors that helped make this event happen. Kudos to all!

winter weather is right around the corner - info about school closings
As we move into the winter season, please take a moment to review school closing procedures. The decision to close schools is typically made by our superintendent, Dr. Schumacher, in consultation with local agencies and school districts before 6 a.m. after thoroughly reviewing weather and road conditions, along with discussing the safety concerns for students and staff.
If winter weather forces the closure of schools in Libertyville Elementary District 70, the information will be distributed by being:
1) Announced on the District 70 website at d70schools.org, as well as all the school websites,
2) Pushed out through the School Messenger Notification System through phone calls,
3) Delivered through a D70 email to the home address used to register a student.
4) Posted to Twitter @LibertyvilleD70, and Facebook @Libertyville D70,
5) Announced on Chicago-area stations (see list below), and
6) Accessible through the Emergency Closing Center directly at www.emergencyclosing.com.
Parents will ONLY receive notice if schools are being closed, otherwise the day will proceed as usual. Please recognize that no system is foolproof; a power outage or extreme demand on these systems could affect access to communications technologies.
School closures typically are announced by 6 a.m.
School closures are reported to the Emergency Closing Center, which broadcasts the information on the following Chicago stations: WGN-AM (720), WBBM-AM (780), and CBS-TV (2), NBC-TV (5), ABC-TV (7), WGN-TV (9), FOX-TV, and CLTV cable.
Families may also call the District Administrative Offices at (847) 362-9695 to hear a recorded telephone message concerning school closings.
It is important to remember that weather conditions may improve or deteriorate after a determination is made. A great deal of care is put into deciding to open/close schools because the safety and well being of students and staff is always a priority.
