Halloween fun
Thank you for supporting our Halloween celebrations at school. From the hard-working parents who dedicated their time and energy to making class parties fun for children, to the parents who came to the parade to enjoy the students walking by, to all the efforts at home getting ready for the day and donating items for the parties -- everyone's efforts contributed to a very fun day at school.
halloween read in
With special thanks to Mrs. Johnson for her leadership on October 29th, students came back to school for an enjoyable evening listening to teachers read Halloween stories. Students were broken into groups throughout the building and enjoyed spending time with teachers in this relaxed atmosphere. Students received glow lights to help promote safe trick-or-treating and popcorn balls to take home. Thanks also to the 18 teachers for volunteering their time to be with students on this spook-tacular event.
construction update
The upcoming Board of Education meeting (Monday, November 9th, at 6:30 pm at the Educational Resource Center) will include the D70 Board’s review of their recent tour of all school facilities and demographic studies as they relate to Copeland and Rockland's potential construction needs. Updates on these discussions, the subsequent Board action plan and the Building Construction Committee’s role going forward will be provided in Board minutes and future school newsletters.
a "note" from Mrs griffin, music teacher
It’s been very active in the music room these past few months! We are quickly approaching the Fall Sing! If your student is in Chorus Club, 4th or 5th grade, the Fall Sing is at Butterfield School (note change in location from previous years) at 6:30 PM. Your student should arrive dressed nicely to the Butterfield Commons. I’m truly looking forward to an exciting performance!! Last week, our K-3 students enjoyed singing spooky songs, and our 3rd graders have started to work hard on their recorders!
The beginning band students have been hard at work! They are now on week 4 of playing their instrument, and have been doing a fantastic job! Make sure to ask your student what they are working on in band. 5th grade band students should be encouraged to perform “mini-concerts” for family and friends!

citizenship counts at copeland
News From Character Counts!
November and December are the months we will be focusing on the Pillar of Citizenship. Today is Pillar Friday. Students were invited to wear purple, the color for Citizenship. We will have our Veterans Day Assembly on Tuesday November 10th. Students will be doing various activities this month to help highlight Citizenship, and we begin with an opportunity to write a letter to each of our Veterans and local heroes. Our youngest students will write to firemen, middle grates to police officers, and oldest students to military members. Students are learning appropriate greetings for the intended audience: "Dear Veteran," or "Dear Hero" are welcomed, but students should avoid writing "Dear Marine" or "Dear Soldier" as these titles do not apply to each division of the military. Happy Citizenship Month everyone, and thank you for making Citizenship Count at Copeland!

third grade poetry slam
The third grade students showcased their growing reading fluency skills by participating in a Halloween poetry slam on Tuesday, Oct. 27th. Students worked to learn and memorize their poems, add actions, and some even added props. The students recited poems in front of their parents and peers allowing them the opportunity to practice reading aloud with expression, positive rate, and accuracy.
