attendance counts at copeland
On September 30th, Student Council President Grace and Vice President Emilie joined Mrs. Poelking to accept a 2nd Place recognition for the Lake County Attendance Counts contest. This contest recorded attendance from the first week in September. We are very proud of this recognition.
Parents, please keep in mind that when you take your child out of school for vacations or extended absences that are not health related, they are missing vital school experiences that cannot be replicated. Some examples of missed experiences: discussions, experiments, guest presenters, projects, presentations, questions asked by other students, etc., etc. Teachers are often asked to provide work missed during absences. Worksheets and problems can be done at home, and teachers do their best to catch students up after absences. School attendance, however, is important to capture all learning experiences. On-time, consistent attendance is also shown to translate into positive lifelong work habits for later on down the road.
Thank you for making attendance count at Copeland!

parent-teacher conferences
October 19 5:15 - 8:15
October 20 3:15 - 8:15
Parent-teacher conferences take place twice each year -- once in October and once in February. Conferences are scheduled in 15-minute time slots with homeroom teachers only. If you would like to meet with a teacher other than your child's homeroom teacher, please contact him/her directly.
In order to schedule a conference, parents need to register and then schedule through a website called PTC Wizard. The registration window is open now through October 14th. After October 14th, conferences will need to be scheduled by calling the school office. The directions for registering and scheduling as well as a link to the website can be found on the Copeland website under the "Home" tab and "Parent-Teacher Conferences." Here are quick links to the directions and to the PTC Wizard site:

THANK YOU, SCOUTS, of providing babysitting for school-age children in the gym/multipurpose room during conferences on both days. Please do not send in any toys.
THANK YOU, CFA, for running the Scholastic Book Fair in the library during conferences.

Thank you, MRS. CHICKEY and MRS. EDELSBERG, for your leadership with Variety Show over many years. (Mrs. Chickey, we will miss your leadership next year!)
Thank you, AUDIENCE members for coming out to support the students and for being such a positive, encouraging audience.

Risk watch -- fire safety
Throughout the school year, Copeland invites the Libertyville Fire and Police Departments to share safety lessons with our students. Today, the fire department came out to talk about fire safety. One question asked of students, "Do you have a designated meeting place at home in case of a fire like you do here at school?" Thank you to our local services for keeping us safe and helping us learn!!
Students: Fire Poster Safety Contest Posters are due Monday, October 10th. Here is a link to the flyer.

cougars showing great character
We had a full bucket this week! These students had their Cougie Cards drawn (2 from each grade level), and are invited to Lunch with the Principal on November 10th.
a peek into 4th grade
We've had a great start in 4th grade! During math time, we've been working on multi-digit addition, subtraction, and multiplication. It's been fun to explore different multiplication methods while applying them to solve real-world problems. In reading/language arts, we have reviewed basic writing strategies, types of sentences, parts of sentences, and applying the writing process. We are working hard on writing descriptive paragraphs and personal narratives! We have explored the Northeast region in Social Studies. We've learned about the roots of our country as we engage in a discussion about the nature of democracy. Technology skills continue to be a focus in 4th grade, and each week, we spend time working on Compass Learning and Typing Agent. We are excited for our field trip in November to the Civil War Museum in Kenosha, WI! As we continue in 4th grade, we look forward to helping your child emerge as an independent learner, and showing responsibility.
