happy thanksgiving
Whether you are staying at home or traveling a long distance next week, I hope you enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday. Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday. It is a time to get together with family and friends near and far and be grateful for each other and for our lives. I am grateful to the Copeland Community for your shared commitment to providing an excellent educational experience for children in a safe, happy environment. Gobble, Gobble!

****Students will go outside to play unless the windchill drops below zero. Please check the weather forecast in the morning and make sure your child comes to school prepared with the clothing necessary to keep warm on cold days.

copeland citizens contribute to libertyville food pantry
Thank you to all who contributed to help stock the shelves at the Libertyville Food Pantry. Donations will be picked up Tuesday, November 24th - so it's not too late! Thank you, also, to Mrs. Sieks for her leadership and for helping students celebrate their donations with helping hands. These helping hands and generous donations are a small example of our caring and generous community of great CITIZENS.
end of first trimester
It's hard to believe, but the first trimester of the 2015-2016 school year is already behind us. Teachers are working on report cards that will go home with students on Tuesday, December 1st.
We recommend that you review the report card with your child to celebrate strengths and set goals for improvement. Please make sure to pay particular attention to Characteristics of Successful Learners in your discussion.
A resource is available on the District 70 website that provides parents with further information on learning objectives for each grade level. Here is a quick link to Curriculum Guides:

veteran's day celebration
On Tuesday, November 10th, Copeland Manor honored veterans and active service members in a special assembly. After the Scouts led the Pledge of Allegiance, Mrs. Griffin led the chorus in singing "The Star Spangled Banner." Our special guests then passed a microphone around the room and shared their stories and messages regarding service to our country. They spoke of challenges and opportunities, leadership and friendship, and camels and beetles -- to name but a few. Thank you, Mrs. Chickey and Mrs. Travelstead, for your organization and to everyone who made this a truly special celebration. Our goal was to make sure students understood why we honor veterans, and we believe we met our goal!
construction update
During a special Board of Education Meeting on November 9th, the Board reviewed plans that addressed building needs at Copeland. This was an informational meeting for the Board to ask questions of administrators and the architect working on this project. The Board will continue conversations during the regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting on November 23rd.
thank you, highland strings, for visiting copeland!
bravo, 4th and 5th grade singers!
Under the leadership of Mrs. Griffin, Copeland's music teacher, the chorus sang two songs before students in 4th and 5th grades performed a Fall Sing celebrating different genres of musical styles. The show was called "Let's Jan! Its our Band!" You sounded great, students -- and you can move too!
a peek into fourth grade
We have launched into fourth grade with excitement and purpose! Our studies have taken us mathematically through addition/subtraction to a place where this is second nature to us. We have just completed multiplication using visual models as well as the traditional methods and met with good success. Writing has been evolving as we explore various writing styles such as the narrative, opinion papers and an up coming biographic sketch. Along with the topics, grammar is infused helping writers use better word choice, expanding vocabulary and applying the structure of grammar to their own writing. Science has led us to discover biomes, learn about specific needs within a food web and chain and the role we play in our environment. Social studies has been based on regions and we have traveled through the Northeast learning about the geography as well as the rich history of the founding of our nation in that part of the United States. We are now in the Southeast where we will learn about the Civil War. That led us to go on a field trip to the Civil War Museum in Kenosha. We not only looked at displays but we met living historians that shared some of the stories and lives of a few of those folks that made history seem alive! So many more things to learn and people to learn about. Miles to go before we sleep....

mrs. livermore is proud of her writers
It is no surprise we have so many imaginative and expressive writers- when they are recognized by others for their skill it is a bit of a thrill. This fall, students from Copeland entered into a writing contest reflecting what is important to them. The class worked together and brainstormed, proofed, corrected and edited one another writing to produce the following recipients of recognition:
Jocelyn H, "Live Long the Amazing"
Jack B, "Good Times"
Arianna T, "Sibling Fun"
Christian M, "Family Counts"
Liam B, "Hockey "
Santino B, "A Gecko's Life"
Jake G, "Football, the Amazing Sport"

Caroline T, "My Amazing Mom"
Rebekah S, "With the Sheep Herd"
Nevaeh H, "The Fourth Grade Decision"
Mina L, "Helping Animals"

Kids have a voice and when given a chance can impact others, as they have done with their writing today!

candy donations delivered to the troops
Our post-Halloween request to Copeland families to donate their extra candy was a huge success. Seven hundred and twenty-two pounds of treats are on their way to U.S. troops overseas. On behalf of the Copeland family and the men and women of our military: thank you for your generosity and support.
