traffic reminders
During the cold winter months, traffic increases at arrivals and dismissals. To help make these times run safely and efficiently (with a touch of speedily), please remember the following:
- Pull forward as far as you can to help the person behind you
- Only travel SOUTH on 7th Avenue (do NOT turn left out of the parking lot or turn left into the parking lot)
- Encourage a quick exit from the car by students (before you leave the house, get your hugs and kisses in and have backpacks on laps)
CFA FUN FAIR MARCH 5TH

character counts at copeland -- hunger insecurity awareness
With thanks to our Character Counts coordinators, Mrs. Travelstead and Mrs. Chickey, along with teacher helpers and Chartwells for food, many families enjoyed getting together on January 27th to learn about food insecurity in our Lake County and throughout our country. Following a short presentation and a story, families had dinners with various amounts of food provided in order to experience disparity. Families were invited to participate in an at-home activity and plan food with a limited budget. Families also were invited to donate to a local food pantry. If you would like to send in a donation, please mark your donation to, "Hope Food Distribution." Thank you for helping us learn about Fairness and Caring in our community.
positive behavior celebration
On January 29th, the school gathered together to celebrate the positive choices students have made for the first 100 days of school. Mr. Feldman began the assembly by reviewing the Copeland School Promises and the opportunities for positive recognition as well as negative reminders (minor behaviors) and consequences (major behaviors). Then, the students enjoyed watching the teachers compete in "Minute to Win It" games. At the end of the year, students who keep their "promises" will have a chance to play the same games during an end-of-year Positive Behavior Celebration. Ask your child about the games -- we had so much fun. Check out some fun photos.

copeland celebrates the 100th day in school
copeland has a word master challenge champion!
A student representing Copeland Manor School recently received a perfect score in the first of three meets for this year’s WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually.
Competing in the difficult Blue Division of the WordMasters Challenge™, fifth grader, Matthew R., earned a perfect score of 20 in the recent meet. Nationally, only 52 fifth graders achieved a perfect score.
The WordMasters Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. Although most vocabulary enrichment and analogy-solving programs are designed for use by high school students, WordMasters Challenge™ materials have been specifically created for younger students in grades three through eight. They are particularly well suited for children who are motivated by the challenge of learning new words and enjoy the logical puzzles posed by analogies.

caring cougars
Vijay and Sanjay, with help from their mom, heard about the water situation in Flint, Michigan, and decided to help out by collecting water bottle donations from friends and neighbors. They were able to donate 18 cases of water to the Grayslake Fire Department who have collected over 600 cases of water bottles. The Grayslake Fire Department is joining the efforts of the Buffalo Grove Fire Department who will take all combined donations to Flint, Michigan, where fresh water is needed. Well done, boys!
