exploration day
Many, many thanks to all of the parents who coordinated, organized, scheduled, served, presented, and did so much to make Exploration Day 2016 a huge success. On Friday, May 6th, students enjoyed a kick off assembly featuring TOPS animal trainers and then four presentations that encouraged them to create, work in teams, communicate, use technology, solve problems -- all of the D70 Applications for Learning. What a fun learning day thanks to the hours and efforts of our parents and community members.
construction update
The footprints are in and the concrete is being poured for the new classrooms and gym. Please follow us on Twitter @CopelandD70 to see pictures every Friday and track the progress on the external construction. Internal construction will begin quickly after school is out on June 2nd. Over the summer, the playground may be behind fencing to allow for workers to safely access the site. The rear field will remain open for play. Many teachers will be moving into new classrooms in August, so they are beginning to pack up various resources for safe storage. Mrs. Johnson is also beginning to pack up the books in the library while keeping curriculum needs at the forefront. The mobile classroom that has been put to great use this year will be moved out in early June. As always, if you have any questions or concerns related to construction (or any matter), please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Poelking at [email protected].
friendly reminder -- please complete registration (including payment) for the 16-17 school year for all returning copeland cougars
what's happening in First grade?
First grade students visited Milwaukee Discovery Museum. They were able to explore a variety of hands on exhibits about sound, simple machines, water purification, the Great Lakes and much more. A favorite highlight included a touch tank that allowed students to touch a variety of sea animals.
battle of the books -- district champions
Copeland Manor's Battle of the Books Champions competed Monday against Butterfield school to determine the champions. Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading program aimed at encouraging students to read good books and have fun while competing with their peers. Copeland had 32 fifth graders participate. They formed teams of four players and started to read. The Battle of the Books reading list included 35 books that were nominated for either the Bluestem or Rebecca Caudill book award for 2016. The teams split up these books, read them and took careful notes. Monday's competition marked the end of almost 5 months or reading, studying and note taking for these students.
Copeland’s winning team this year was Team MAAS which consisted of Maya A, Alexandra M, Samantha W and Anna K. These students faced off against Butterfield’s school winners, the Lightning Dogs, to determine the District 70 Elementary Champions. At the end, Copeland students emerged the winners but It was a great battle all around and both teams really showed off everything they had learned. At the end of the Battle, students shook hands to continue to reinforce that character really does count in Dstrict 70. Great job to our school winners and all the participants this year. Thank you, Mrs. Johnson, for your being such an encouraging and supportive coach!
