miss maria day - september 30th
On Wednesday, September 30th, the Copeland community celebrated our custodian, Maria Jiminez, for her strength and courage as she completed a year-long treatment plan. With the Highland marching band, pink capes, and wide smiles in place, we got together to let Maria know how much we appreciate her positive attitude and approach to LIFE. A special treat was when Maria (and Mrs. Bell) had the good fortune to sign "Jessica," a pink fire truck driven by Firefighter Rusin from Pink Heals of Northern Illinois (www.pinkhealsIL.org). Maria embodies the character traits we promote and is an excellent example of a diligent worker who makes sure she has done whatever she can to make staff and students happy, and she takes pride in a job well done. We love you, Maria, and wish you the best in all the LIFE has to offer.
Special thanks to Dr. Schumacher and all District 70 administrators who attended the celebration and to Mrs. Bollinger and Mr. Swartzloff for leading the Marching Hornets in their march from Highland to Copeland -- best of luck this weekend in the Homecoming Parade!!

attendance counts at copeland
September was Attendance Awareness Month in Lake County. All five District 70 schools were recognized for outstanding attendance at a recent celebration. Our new Student Council President, Danny S., and Vice President, Anna K., joined Mr. Feldman in representing Copeland and bringing back the certificate for 5th place in the recent attendance contest for schools of similar size. We are proud that our students come to school happy and ready to learn!
student council
Last week, twenty fifth grade students presented very thoughtful and articulate speeches as part of a campaign to serve as a Copeland Student Council Officer. An election was held shortly thereafter, and we congratulate the Officers. Many thanks to this year's teacher leaders for Student Council, Miss Snider and Mrs. Vipond. Meetings will be held during lunch and will begin soon.
parent-teacher conferences october 21st and 22nd
Conferences are an important part of our school year and a chance for parents to meet individually with homeroom teachers to celebrate classroom achievement and set goals for improvement. When teachers and partners are partners in students' educational experiences, great things happen. If you haven't already done so, please visit the PTC Wizard site to schedule a conference for your child(ren). Our conference schedule only allows for 15 minutes with your homeroom teacher. If you would like to set up a conference with a teacher providing an intervention/enrichment or a fifth grade teacher other than your child's homeroom teacher, please contact that teacher individually to schedule a time.
We are once again fortunate that Girl Scouts will be providing babysitting in the gym during conferences. Thank you, girls (and parents), for this important service to our school. The Scholastic Book Fair will also be open during conferences -- stop by and shop.:)
Here is a quick link to both directions on how to register on the site and to schedule conferences as well as a link to the PTC Wizard website:

original art works - an opportunity for parents to enjoy student work at home
We are pleased to announce that during the fall semester, Copeland will be participating in the Original Works program. Through Original Works, each child will have the opportunity to have his/her very own artwork reproduced onto a variety of high quality products. The products range from magnets, mugs and mouse pads, to ceramic tiles, t-shirts, note cards and nearly two dozen other options.
Once the artwork is created, parents and children will have the chance to select which product or product to feature the artwork. The program is designed to encourage creativity and student self-esteem. The resulting products make unique gifts that are practical for any season or occasion.
Complete details on the program are coming home with students in backpack mail. For more information on Original Works, please visit www.originalworks.com

These students had their Cougie cards drawn and joined Mrs. Poelking for Lunch with the Principal (along with other students whose cards were previously drawn) on September 25th. Way to go, Super Cougies!
A note from our 5th grade teachers
Fifth grade is off to a great start this year! We are excited to have Mrs. Flader join our Copeland team! To help further prepare our students for middle school, fifth grade students switch classes for some of the different core subjects. This year, Mrs. Julian and Mrs. Stermitz are switching classes. Mrs. Julian is teaching science and language arts, while Mrs. Stermitz is teaching math and social studies. At the same time, Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Flader are also switching classes. Mrs. Lewis is teaching social studies and language arts, while Mrs. Flader teaches math and science. All 5th grade teachers teach reading to their homeroom class. In Math, we are working on the place value of decimals. We are learning to add and subtract decimals, as well as rounding and estimating. In Social Studies, students love discussing current events four days a week, focusing on local, state, national, and global news. We are also learning a lot about geography, including some physical features of the United States. In Science, we are learning about Earths' systems, including water and a study of different ecosystems. In Language Arts, everyone is writing personal narratives and adding sensory details to their stories. 5th graders have already learned a lot this year!

Dine and Donate -- Cougars Take Over Culvers
Way to go Copeland Cougars!! According to the manager at Culvers, Copeland Dine and Donate night "by far the busiest that store has been." Over $4600 was made within the 3 hour shift and Culvers was happy to donate $702.54 to the CFA. Huge thanks to our Copeland staff that took time out of their night to work and also to our families! I know there was a wait for food, but we truly appreciate everyone that waited in the lines to support us!!
SAVE THE DATE!!! Find a babysitter and grab a group of friends and head to Downings! On Saturday, November 7th, the CFA will be hosting a Parents Night Out! There will be prizes to be won, pizza, specialty drinks, entertainment, and of course a lot of fun! We are looking for our musical Copeland parents to be part of our entertainment. So if you play and instrument, are in a band, or want to sing, please contact Michelle Sieks ([email protected]) to be part of our entertainment line up!!! Much more information will be coming to you in the next week!
