character counts week
We start each year with a strong focus on positive character. We also help students view learning through a "growth mindset" and appreciate hard work and effort and the fact that we learn through our failures. We have read together, had great discussions, and supported each other as citizens through community donations to the Hope Food Pantry and with national donations to Hurricane Harvey Relief. Donations to Hurricane Harvey relief will be accepted through September. Thank you to everyone for showing this week and every day how CHARACTER COUNTS AT COPELAND!
September begins the month of RESPONSIBILITY. Cougars are proud of their responsible choices.

chalk it up to good character
On Thursday, September 7th, elementary students from D70 met at Cook Park to "Chalk it Up" to good character. Huge thanks to Mrs. Travelstead, Copeland's Character Counts leader, for meeting up with 4th and 5th grade students and their parents to spread the cheer. Thank goodness for pictures to hold onto the memories since Mother Nature washed away the artwork this morning.

student council elections
Each year, fifth grade students have the opportunity to participate in an election for student council officer positions. These students showed pride in their school and great talent in their ability to present election speeches to their 2nd through 5th grade peers on Thursday, September 7th. Many thanks to Miss Snider, Student Council leader at Copeland, for mentoring these students. Elections took place following the speeches. Copeland's Student Council Officers for the 2017-2018 school year are President Jozie, Vice President Ava, Secretary Maddy, and Public Relations Avery.
health and wellness education
Health standards are included in the Illinois Enhanced Physical Education Standards. Students in Libertyville District 70 elementary schools will learn more about health topics during health classes with the physical education teachers one time a week for one trimester. Students will learn about topics such as nutrition, hygiene and body systems with primary materials from Health World Education. The enhanced health education will help students learn skills they will use to make healthy choices throughout their lifetime.
september is attendance awareness month -- attendance counts next week!
Copeland School is an enthusiastic participator in the Lake County Regional Office of Education’s focus on student attendance during the month of September. During the week of September 11-15, attendance counts towards a county-wide competition for percentage of student attendance. Student attendance has a direct impact on student achievement. Much of what student learns comes through class discussions or activities that cannot be replicated at home. When your child has a fever or is vomiting, they need to stay home until well. However, it is our intention to avoid unnecessary absences to maximize students’ opportunities to learn. Help us Make it Count!

The opportunities we give our children impact them on a daily basis and provide them with knowledge and experiences that can last a lifetime. Destination Imagination encourages kids to have fun, take risks, work with others and identify each individual’s personal strengths. If you are interested in becoming a team manager for a group of students or would like to learn more about Destination Imagination, please come to the parent informational meeting on Thursday, September 14 at 6:30pm in the Copeland cafeteria. Students are encouraged to come with their parents!

gifted, talented and enrichment at copeland manor with mrs. Morden
We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with so many children in District 70 through enrichment and gifted services this year! As every child is unique and special, District 70's Gifted, Talented, and Enrichment (GTE) program is designed to focus on the varying levels of needs of our students. As GTE teachers, we are able to service and enrich students at different ability levels, for divergent interest areas, and across all curricular areas.
We are very excited about some additional opportunities for all students! Beginning this year, the GTE teachers will provide whole class enrichment experiences in grades 1 through 5. During this time, students will learn and practice divergent, convergent, problem solving, and visual thinking skills through games, puzzles, and other challenging activities. These activities will be led by the GTE teacher and will take place 5-6 times during the school year.
Another exciting opportunity this year is that Math Stars will be open to all students who wish to take on the problem solving challenge! Students will not be pulled out of class but instead will work on their Math Stars problems upon finishing an activity earlier than others in their regular classroom or during a choice time. After completing a grade-level set of problems, students will be able to visit their GTE teacher for recognition of their hard work!
Students in grades 1st through 5th will continue to receive pull-out enrichment services for mathematics and reading. In math enrichment, we will pull out small groups of students who have demonstrated a need to extend their thinking, based on pretests and classroom performance. The activities are aligned with our mathematics program and the Common Core Standards, and are meant to challenge children beyond grade-level expectations. Math groups change with each unit and are responsive to student need.
Reading enrichment sessions will begin for students in grades 1-5 who demonstrate a need for enrichment beyond grade-level. We will use data from Fountas and Pinnell, Star assessments, and classroom performance to determine reading groups. As flexibility is important and is a best practice, these groups will also change throughout the year based on student growth and need.
For a complete scope of the enrichment and gifted services offered, please visit the resources on the District 70 Curriculum website or contact your building’s GTE teacher who will be happy to answer any questions you have.
