welcome to a new school year
Each new school year brings joy and energy. Parents send their children off to school with a hug and a wish for a great year ahead. Children skip to the blacktop eager to see their friends and hear from their teachers. There is nothing like this feeling! I have heard countless stories of kindness and support from new families being welcomed, new students being invited to play, and kindergarten students learning all that there is about this new school experience. THANK YOU all for making Copeland such a joyful place to be. TOGETHER, WE WILL WORK HARD, HAVE FUN AND BE NICE!
Traffic Safety. Safety is a priority. Please remember to practice patience and make good decisions for your children and for the children around you. School drop offs can quickly turn chaotic and dangerous when unsafe decisions are made. Extra supervision is not always the answer. Safe driving is the answer. Here are some points that can make our morning arrival time move quickly and safely :
Please say goodbye at the path. One of special aspects of our building configuration is the fact that the blacktop area in the back of the school is protected from the business of the front of the school. Students love to play before school and are safe and secure with supervisors. Parents, please encourage your child to be independent and walk to the back of the school on their own. The bell rings at 8:05 when students begin lining up and enter the building. After 8:10, students should enter the building at the front entrance. Students are expected to be in their classrooms ready to learn at 8:15.

Here are some points that can make our morning arrival time move quickly and safely :
- At arrival and dismissal times, 7th Avenue is a one-way street going South (no left turns out of the circle drive).
- When students are being dropped off, have them ready to exit the car at the curb and pull forward to allow for more cars to pull behind you. Have back packs ready with the child.
- Never allow a child to exit the car unless he/she is exiting to a curb.
- The best place to drop off a child is on 7th Avenue. The circle drive is where the buses drop off students.
- NEVER drive around an extended stop arm of a school bus.

BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS ESTABLISHED
Part of Copeland's positive behavior intervention system includes setting behavior expectations from the beginning of the year. On Friday, August 25th, students traveled to "behavior stations" to learn about expected behavior in the hallways, recess, cafeteria, bathrooms, office, and classrooms.
STAR TESTING BEGINS NEXT WEEK
STAR testing is our benchmark assessment for all students in District 70 that occurs at the beginning of the year, in December, and at the end of the year. This is one piece of data, along with classroom and other data, that can be used to monitor student growth and identify areas of strength and set goals for improvement. Kindergarten and first grade students take the assessments on iPads in their classroom, and second, third, fourth, and fifth grade students take the assessment on Chromebooks in their classroom. This is an online test that adjusts to the student's achievement. Testing begins next week and reports will be sent home in backpack mail on September 8th.

Look for an email next week with an invitation to participate in vendor lunches. Every Thursday, one of 4 vendors brings lunches in for students who pre-order. The rotations include: pizza (starting September 14th), hot dogs, Culvers, and pasta.
awesome kick off to the new year
Many thanks to Mrs. Eiserman and all the volunteers who made the CFA Kick Off Dinner so much fun. The DJ was awesome (and so were the dancers) and it was a blast to see so many Copeland Cougars coming together as a school community. Thank you to everyone -- we are off and running to a great start.
