Great start of the school year
Thank you all for a wonderful start of the school year. We are all getting into the routines, setting goals, and looking forward to a SUPER year full of SUPER CHOICES. It was wonderful to see so many parents at Curriculum Night. Parents, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about your child's school experience, your classroom teacher is your first point of contact.
character counts week
The students kicked off the school by celebrating with Character Counts Week. They enjoyed stories read by Dr. Schumacher on a podcast (and in some classrooms) and stories read by Mrs. Poelking and Mr. Feldman. Students in Grades 3-5 enjoyed a performance by Meredith O'Connor who recounted her stories of growing up and her commitment to anti-bullying. Fifth grade students painted windows at Indian Motorcycle Shop. Students brought in donations to the Libertyville Food Pantry, the Haven, Orphans of the Storm, and Beacon Place. The week was capped off with a Cougie Spirit Day. Thanks, everyone, for showing every day that CHARACTER COUNTS AT COPELAND.

cougars show super character
When students demonstrate positive character, they may receive a "Cougie Card" celebrating their Super Choices. Students enjoy bringing their Cougie Cards to the office to celebrate their positive choices with the office staff. They then put their cards in a red bucket. Several times throughout the school year, one Cougie Card from each grade level is chosen from the bucket. These students are called down for a group photo and are then invited to a special lunch with either Mr. Feldman or Mrs. Poelking. Here is the first group of Super Cougies to celebrate:
counseling connection by mrs. Travelstead, copeland manor social worker
A Note from mrs. Beckman
copeland school nurse
Please remember that all kindergarten students and students new to Copeland need to turn in school health records that include a record of a physical, immunizations and an eye exam.

The Library is Up and Running!
The mobile library is unpacked, organized and being used. Students and teachers are making the transition to our library space quite well. We are very lucky to have both a library and a classroom space this year. While this does necessitate some movement during our library time, it also ensured that we were able to fit every book from our old library into the new space. No books in storage, yay!
In our first few weeks of library lessons, students have learned the new layout of our space as well as how our time will be structured. On a typical day, students come to the library classroom, located inside the school, and have their lesson. With about ten minutes remaining, we then travel as a group to find some good reading material for the week. Students in the younger grades have been focusing on book care and those in the older grades have been discussing all the new book awards out this year. Monarch (K-3), Bluestem (3-5) and Caudill (4-8), are the awards we focus on at Copeland. If you would like to learn more about these awards, please visit the Copeland Library webpage at www.copelandlibrary.weebly.com.
In addition to reading quality literature this year we will also be researching, evaluating websites, note-taking, analyzing literature, and working with technology in many new and interesting ways. When your child comes home with a library book this year, be sure to ask them what skill they worked on that day. They may surprise you with what they learned!

Bricks:
THE BRICKS ARE IN! Next time you are at school, take a look at the brick walkway by the flagpole. The new bricks were installed over summer break. A BIG thank you to Aspen Landscapes, Inc. for all their help with the project.
Dine and Donate:

Rumor has it some of the Copeland staff may be donning Culver’s aprons and delivering food to families who join us! Don’t have time to dine-in? The drive-thru counts too!
